Officer Down! It’s Been 10 Years Since We Lost Officer Brian Eric Huff…

May 3, 2020 By John Roberts

Motor City 911 · Officer Brian Huff 10 Year EOW

Officer Brian Eric Huff – EOW May 3 2010

Detroit Police Officer Brian Eric Huff, Badge #4600, was lost in the early morning hours of May 3rd, 2010, he was 42 years old. Officer Huff and his partner, Officer Joseph D’Angelo, were the first to arrive on the scene of a shots fired call in the 20200 block of Schoenherr, in the DPD’s eastern district. Scout car 5-14 reported on scene and waited for backing units to arrive before attempting contact. It was around 3:30AM.

Soon after Officer Huff & D’Angelo arrived, Officer Kasper Harrison, Officer John Dunlap, Officer Steve Schram and Officer Brian Glover went on scene, taking up positions in the front and rear of the house on Schoenherr.

The 911 caller reported hearing multiple shots coming from the home, known to residents in the area and to the Detroit Police Department as a ‘drug house’.

shooting scene

Officer Huff and Officer D’Angelo decided to take the lead in this incident, fearing the less experienced officers would be in danger. Officer Huff announced himself as a police officer and kicked in the door. As Officer Huff entered, he was gunned down by the shooter who was laying in wait. The shooter will go unnamed in this post, naming ‘it’ gives worth, there’s no worth here. He’s a seething lump of detritus, the kind of detritus you find lining the banks of a stagnant pond.

The shooter attempted to escape after fatally shooting Officer Huff, exchanging gunfire while doing so with the other officers on the scene.

Officer’s returned fire, wounding the shooter and taking him into custody while securing the .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun used to murder Officer Huff. A ‘bag of marijuana’ was also recovered.

4 other officers were wounded or injured during this incident in NE Detroit. Officer’s D’Angelo, Harrison, Dunlap and Schram all received gunshot wounds during the incident, Officer Glover was injured during the gunfight but was not struck by gunfire. The 5 officers have recovered from their physical wounds but I cannot personally say they’ve recovered mentally from losing their friend and mentor Officer Huff.

I don’t think anyone ever fully recovers mentally when they’ve lost a friend in the Line of Duty.

Officer Brian Huff left behind a beautiful wife and a young 10 year old son, now 20. Watching news reports from 2010 are heartbreaking and my thoughts and prayers continue for the family and friends of Officer Brian Eric Huff.

We continue losing brave men and women who have chosen to pin a piece of tin on their chests, knowing full well there’s always the possibility of giving the ultimate sacrifice while insuring the safety of our society.

The shooter was sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole, found guilty of all 17 charges he was charged with.

Since we lost Officer Huff, his scout car and call-sign, 5-14, have been retired out of respect to his service to the community.

On this day, the 3rd of May 2020, we remember you Officer Huff…we remember and honor your ultimate sacrifice.

We must never, ever forget.
