I-94 Shut Down For 4 Hours

Detroit – East Side – 0830AM: A suicidal man stopped traffic on the EB and WB lanes of the I-94 early this morning. Detroit Police units from the 3rd & 9th Precincts responded to reports of an armed man in the area of Harper & Park.

The incident required the closing of the I-94 between Outer Dr & French by the Michigan State Police.

Upon arrival, Detroit police officer’s encountered the man in the middle of Harper Street holding a gun to his head, threatening suicide.

At one point the subject, described as a 32 year old man with marital problems, made his way to a fence that separated Harper Street from the WB lanes of the I-94.

Detroit police requested the closing of I-94 at 08:51AM, fearing the armed subject would jump a chain link fence and make his way into freeway traffic.

Family members of the man stated he had an argument with his spouse, causing him to become despondent.

Detroit Police activated an SRT call-up in response to the mans actions, leading to a lengthly negotiation process which lasted about 3 hours.

During negotiation attempts, the man stated that he’d drop the gun if he was able to see his children.

Detroit Police contacted the family and his mother and children were conveyed to the command post located at Park & Evanston.

During negotiations, the man made statements to the effect that he was going to commit suicide by cop and that the only way he was going to the hospital was in a body bag.

Detroit Police SRT continued negotiations and lost contact with him for about 45 minutes, making a tense situation even tenser.

The man eventually continued dialog with negotiators and during one of those conversations, a flashbang grenade was deployed causing the man to lose control of his weapon and SRT members took him into custody.

The I-94 was then reopened by the Michigan State Police at about 12:44PM.

Once the subject was in custody, Detroit Police took his children to the unit he was being detained in and allowed him to see his children.

The man was taken to Detroit Regional Hospital for a medical evaluation.

SWAT/SRT Callout on the east side of Detroit

Detroit Police & Fire Response To Conner St Barricaded Gunman

Detroit Police had a SWAT/SRT call-out last night and into this morning on Connor & Freud in the east side of Detroit,  5th Detroit Police Precinct.

What started off as just a call of a possible armed robbery ended up being a full-blown in your face barricade with children and adults involved. Detroit Police units from the 5th precinct made the scene late Monday night and were met with gunfire from inside the house. It’s not believed any of the shots were actually fired at officers.

5th precinct supervisors quickly set up a perimeter and contained the scene. Attempts were made to negotiate with the suspects inside the dwelling but they quickly deteriorated, requiring a declaration and call-out of  Detroit PD’s SRT/Hostage Negotiation team.

The suspect had at least 1 hostage according to scouts on the scene.

A wide perimeter had been established due to the proximity of the house and the surrounding neighborhood.

Previous attempts at negotiation had failed and at least 1 attempt “to take out” the armed suspect failed when he went back into the house.

Detroit Fire’s 6th Battalion under the command of Battalion Chief 6 responded to the scene and staged nearby at Clairpointe & Freud.

At around 1:25AM, DPD reported the house was on fire and that the suspect had fired rounds from the dwelling. The 6th Battalion was notified to hang tight until the all clear was given by the DPD.

The DPD SRT Bearcat called the scene secure at around 1:28AM and the 6th Battalion moved in to fight the fire.

DFD dispatch advised Battalion Chief 6 there may still be civilians inside the dwelling and to take appropriate measures. Companies immediately entered the dwelling and started fighting fires in the basement, 1st floor and 2nd floor.

Battalion Chief 6 reported that they had rescued 1 small child during the search. 1 suspect is in custody after being tackled by an SRT Commander. It’s unknown if the 2nd suspect escaped or became a crispy critter during the fire.

2 children were injured and conveyed to a local hospital. 1 child is said to be in critical condition.
