Detroit Police Officers Save A 4 Month Baby Girl

DISPATCH AUDIO OF INCIDENT

With a combined experience level of 71 years, Neighborhood Police Officer (NPO) Douglas Nichols and Sgt Charles Spruce of the Detroit Police Department make quite a team.

Today while responding to a routine call on 8 Mile Road, NPO Nichols & Sgt Spruce noticed a crowd gathering on Conant Street & McNichols Rd.

A crowd had gathered around a vehicle where a baby had been placed on the hood of the vehicle.

The mother of a 4 month old baby told officer’s Spruce & Nichols her baby wasn’t breathing, to the point where the child was changing color.

The officers immediately declared a “Priority” on the departments radio frequency and requested Detroit EMS to the scene, but the situation was getting worse by the second.

Sgt Spruce and NPO Nichols then made the decision to convey the child to Children’s Hospital in their scout car.

Other officers, hearing the priority, initiated moves to block traffic along the route.

Sgt Spruce drove “hot” south on the I-75 and exited Warren where other Detroit Police officers were waiting blocking intersections leading to the hospital.

At one point a truck blocked their path but the pair were able to negotiate around it and safely deliver the baby to the doctors and nurses of Michigan Children’s Hospital.

On a good day, it’s 5.7 miles and a 9 minute drive to Michigan’s Children’s Hospital on Beaubien from Conant & McNichols, but today the pair made in approximately 5 minutes.

Later, NPO Nichols announced on the radio the baby was in guarded condition, had stopped breathing along the route but CPR was performed and she started breathing again.

He thanked those officers who gave them assistance on the way to the hospital.

NPO Nichols said during the interview that “something made him take the Davison exit” earlier while responding to the call on 8 Mile Rd….there’s a mother of a 4 month old baby girl that’s thanking that “something” tonight.

Sometimes God just puts us where we need to be….

They immediately exited the field of fire but not before spotting a suspect dressed in all black firing an AR-15 with a large capacity magazine.

The police unit in question immediately turned around and entered the area again to search for the shooter. Numerous units from the 12th & 10th Precincts made the scene and established a perimeter.

A citizen on the scene told officer’s that he saw the suspect exit a vacant residence and fire at the officers, then run from the scene.

A K-9 (K-9 70) and Detroit PD’s Air 1 (Helicopter Airship) were brought in to track the suspects. The K-9 track ended at a location on Exeter & Remington Streets, east of the original encounter with the gunman.

Police were polling residences with surveillance cameras and it appears as if some of those cameras captured images of the suspects.

Those images are now being enhanced by Detroit Police evidence technicians.

Two subjects were taken into custody and transported to the Detroit Detention Center by units of the 12th Precinct. Their relation to the ambush or to the shooter is not known at this time.

The area around the old state fair grounds is known for its high crime rate and being populated by several drug houses.

A vehicle was also under investigation on Derby St. Evidence techs were dispatched to secure the crime scene and collect evidence.

Detroit Police have since exited the area and are no longer actively searching for the suspects.
