Detroit’s West Side: Shots rang out on one of Detroit’s west side freeways Thursday evening. At around 7:00PM, a Godmother and her 3 year old godson were travelling northbound on the M-39, or Southfield Freeway, when someone in another vehicle fired an unknown number of rounds into their vehicle.
According to dispatch tapes, the shooting occurred in the northbound lanes between Joy Rd and Plymouth.
The 3 year old boy was seated in the rear of the Dodge Journey and secured inside a child’s safety seat. He was struck in the left side by at least 1 bullet. The godmother was uninjured.
With her child bleeding in the rear seat, the victims godmother drove to Plymouth Road and exited, driving in the BP Gas Station @ 17707 Plymouth Rd where authorities were notified.
Detroit EMS Medic 25 was dispatched with officer’s from the Detroit Police’s 6th Precinct.
DEMS Medic 25 conveyed the child, who wasn’t breathing at the time, to Sinai-Grace Hospital, while 6th Precinct scouts blocked streets on its route.
According to dispatch tapes, the Medics of M25 were working to secure an airway on the child and their efforts were obviously rewarded. The child, although in critical condition, is alive and in the hands of medical personnel.
Unfortunately, the child died at Children’s Hospital on Friday morning.
Detroit Police are focusing their attention on images gathered by the BP Gas Stations ‘Green Light’ security cameras. Those images suggest the suspects vehicle is either a white or silver newer model 2 door coupe, possibly a BMW or a Mercedes Benz.

Michigan State Police described the driver of that vehicle as a “light skinned male with a full beard”.
The northbound lanes of the M-39 between Joy Rd & the I-96 remained closed late into the evening while investigators processed the scene.
