Fatal Snowmobile Crash in Alger County
Alger County, Michigan — At approximately 10:30 p.m. on January 17, 2026, troopers from the Michigan State Police Negaunee Post responded to a reported snowmobile crash on Trail 8 near H-58 in Shingleton Township.
The preliminary investigation indicates the snowmobile was traveling on Trail 8 when the operator was unable to negotiate a curve, causing the snowmobile to leave the trail and strike a tree at a high rate of speed. Emergency medical aid was rendered at the scene; however, lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful.
The operator, a 22-year-old man from Garrettsville, Ohio, was pronounced deceased as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. The incident remains under investigation.
