Washington Blvd & Lafayette Blvd-Downtown
Detroit – January 21, 2026
At approximately 12:45 a.m., Detroit Police responded to reports of multiple manhole covers exploding near Washington Boulevard and Lafayette Boulevard. Officers on scene reported fire and flames emitting from the manholes.
DPD secured the area and restricted pedestrian and vehicle access for public safety. Detroit Fire Department Engine 1 and Ladder Truck 20 were dispatched and responded to the scene. Power outages were reported in the surrounding area, and DTE Energy was notified.
DTE advised they do not provide electrical service in that specific area, but stated they would send a crew to evaluate natural gas infrastructure. Public Lighting Department (PLD) was also notified, as they provide electrical service in the area.
During the incident, Battalion Chief 1, Engine 9, and Ladder Truck 20 were dispatched to investigate a fire alarm activation in the electrical room at 1020 Washington Blvd (Hotel Indigo). The alarm was believed to have been triggered by the power interruption.
Michigan Gas Utilities (MichCon) was requested and responded with an estimated 15–20 minute ETA at approximately 1:11 a.m.
At 1:21 a.m., Battalion Chief 1 directed Engine 9 and Ladder Truck 20 to remain at Hotel Indigo to monitor conditions. Engine 1 remained on scene at the manhole incident location.
According to Detroit Police officers on scene, power was restored at approximately 1:57 a.m.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the manhole explosions remains under investigation.
