Ionia DPS Crash Caught On Dash Cam

Patrol Car Accident 3-13-17

Ionia DPS: Ionia DPS patrol car video / audio of the accident on March 13th involving our patrol car.

The impact of the crash moved the camera so that it pointed up, but the audio captured the aftermath of the incident.

The investigation by MSP revealed that our patrol car was doing 21 mph at time of impact, this was from the data pulled from the Electronic Control Module (ECM) by a Specialist from MSP.

Our insurance carrier deemed the patrol car a total loss late last week.

MSP reviewing video of crash involving Ionia DPS, civilian Monday

IONIA — The Michigan State Police-Lakeview Post is reviewing video footage in its investigation of a collision involving a public safety patrol car and a civilian vehicle at 9:37 p.m. Monday night.

Ionia Department of Public Safety Officer Ben Fryc had turned left from westbound West Washington Street and was heading southbound on Dexter Street when a northbound pickup truck failed to yield the right of way, according to IDPS Deputy Director John Odette. The driver attempted to turn into the driveway of the Marathon gas station in front of the patrol car, and Fryc struck the passenger side of the truck.

Odette said MSP was called in to investigate because this was an officer-involved accident and the department does not investigate incidents involving its own officers. The crash was captured on the officer’s in-car video camera.

IDPS personnel removed the truck’s passenger door to extricate a passenger from the vehicle, and she was transported by Life EMS to Sparrow Ionia Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Neither the driver of the truck nor Fryc were injured. Both vehicles sustained significant damage, Odette said.

Fryc had been dispatched to take a non-priority complaint in the 600 block of West Main Street when the crash occurred, said Odette. He was not running in emergency mode.

Fryc joined IDPS in October 2015. He has had no incidents prior to this accident, Odette said.

Yeah I know, it’s a kid pushing a dresser off his kid brother, very brave. Thankfully surveillance tapes weren’t common when I was a snot-nosed little kid. I’d still be in prison as my little brother suffered….and rightly so. He smelled funny and wouldn’t stop touching my stuff.

I probably, although it can’t be proven, pushed a dresser on top of my brother a few times.

Why do we always want to punish people over the bad choices others make in life?

Let’s look at a recent case in Detroit.

A gaggle of teens find a gun in their grandmothers bedroom; supposedly unloaded according to reports in the media, and use it to scare another teen to death…literally.

So the teens find the weapon, one of them loads it and giggling with anticipation they present the weapon to the dead teen in an attempt to “scare him”, the gun discharges striking the 13 year old in the chest, another promising young man in Detroit dead.

Why they loaded it if it was in fact unloaded, I don’t know, but let’s keep going here.

So I’m going with the lack of criminal intent, if only for this blog post. I’m sure the Detroit Police will determine intent during the investigation, but for now I’m going with the whole accidental shooting thing.

So, the teens in question, 3 of them ranging in age from 13-15 years old make a terrible choice and end up killing another.

The intent to kill wasn’t there in this scenario, just to scare the crap out of the dead teen if you’re to believe all the reports. I’m going to break all the rules and do just that right now.

They made a choice by removing the weapon and playing with it.

So now the police, Detroit in this case, are holding a hard working woman in custody because the gun she owns was insecure, unsecured…whatever.

This isn’t the first time that’s happened in Detroit, just the latest.

Choices

So we have 3 teens who made a bad choice and tossed personal responsibility out the window, a dead teen who’s only mistake was being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and a grandmother now facing a criminal record over those bad choices made by the 3 teens.

There are no laws in Michigan requiring owners of firearms to secure those firearms with gunlocks or safes.

There are laws on the books for control of firearms: (Page 156)

752.861 Careless, reckless or negligent use of firearms; penalty.

Sec. 1. Any person who, because of carelessness, recklessness or negligence, but not wilfully or wantonly, shall cause or allow any firearm under his immediate control, to be discharged so as to kill or injure another person, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor, punishable by imprisonment in the state prison for not more than 2 years, or by a fine of not more than $2,000.00, or by imprisonment in the county jail for not more than 1 year, in the discretion of the court.

Personal Responsibility

Does it make sense to have a weapon secured with a gunlock? Of course it does, especially when you have young children in the home.

In this case, I’d argue that teens ranging in age between 13-15 aren’t kids, though.

If the weapon is there for self defense, no. There are no weapons here that are secured by gunlocks. That would defeat the purpose of having the weapon ready for use in the case it was needed.

Example: Bad guy enters home, bad guy shouldn’t be in home, bad guy needs to be sent screaming to Hell for making a bad choice.

There are also no children present in our home. Zero, grandchildren or otherwise. None. Would those weapons be secured if there was, of course.

If our home is left unattended, yes, they’re secured behind a moat filled with Nile crocodiles.

If we make laws punishing people for the poor choices of others, what would stop our lawmakers from drafting a law punishing my wife if I went outside in slippers during a period of ice and snow, then fell on my fat ass when I slipped on a patch of ice? (This just happened, leave her alone, I made a bad choice)

We cannot legislate stupid, irresponsibility, carelessness. If there’s intent to harm, injure or maim, then yes, but there are laws on the books for that.

The Police Response

Police said they believe the shooting is a result of a gun owner failing to properly secure her weapon.

My Response

The Detroit Scanner believes the shooting is a result of stupid teens making stupid choices.

Update: Autopsy reports state the teen was shot in the back, not the chest. A game changer?

Incidents of vandalism with a pro-Trump slant have also been aired repeatedly. All of these attacks have been blamed on pro-Trump supporters. If blame hasn’t been placed on the backs of Trump supporters, it’s been insinuated. The word alleged is mysteriously missing from the media word pool of late too. Mysterious no? Anyway….

The last week has been a violent one no doubt. Protests in major cities by disenfranchised non-voting liberals has been splashed all over our television screens. Stories of sad liberal students requiring counseling in major universities has also been mentioned, repeatedly, in the press. Crayons, coloring books, teddybears and round table crying fits have all been used as a way to lessen the impact of their political hack being ground to dust by half the countries voting population. Except for the conservative student body, but maybe we’ll write about that later.

In this media melee, the kid suffering from Aspergers Syndrome according to reports by friends, has been vilified by the mainstream media. The same media that has aired the disappointment experienced by bazillions of university students, anarchists and anyone looking for a good time in trashing cities across the nation.

Los Angeles has seen freeways closed by groups of rioters and Portland, God love them,  has seen attacks on not only police but citizens as well. The reason according to the media, sadness, disappointment, a lack of voice. Those poor poor kids.

All through this period the media has been there, consoling the youth of America, understanding their disappointment in the democratic process. In essence, electing politicians to offices of responsibility should be a big city thing, rural areas in the midwest should be ignored.

Unfortunately the rural areas of this country have been ignored and the result is a Donald Trump administration starting on the 20th of January 2017.

Calls for abolishing the electoral college has been covered as well by the media, sometimes garnering the support of media hacks on cable news. Subverting The Constitution is the new thing now, media types all agreeing that there’s something wrong when their political hack loses an election they were sure to win. In most places of this country that’s called treason.

When media does try to offer its reading or listening public some common sense, the hack responsible is bullied by lesser known hacks and social media hit men/women from the left.

So this kid at Ohio State afflicted with Aspergers Syndrome has most likely watched the media and listened to his enlightened pals at Ohio State,  immersed himself in the media’s bloviating and came to the conclusion that violence is a proper response to diverging political opinions.

The media and university laid the groundwork, he was just carrying out what he thought was right.

So who’s at fault here, the kid with limited mental capacity or the media with limited mental capacity?

Someone gets a hair up their butt and boink, you’re screwed for a few hours. Checks on DDoS site confirmed the attacks are taking place and Twitter remains flopping around on the ground.

So you see, it’s been hectic. We’re in the process of updating the 170 year old farmhouse, replacing a roof on THE BARN, replacing 25 170 year old windows with brand new shiny ones…and we have…we, lol, I have a ton of leaves to rake…and I have a toothache.

I’ve also been busy updating the website with a brand new updated theme, changing php memory allocations and feeding the squirrels running the damn thing. Thankfully, our website host is the best in the business so most of this stuff has gone pretty smoothly. Is smoothly a word? Anyway, I’m trying to make the website a place people can go to and get information. Am I competing with the big dogs? Of course not. I’m just a mangy poodle with a spastic colon. I know that.

Big news is the AI I’ve installed in the website/facebook/twitter. It’s almost human, has feelings (I think I’ve hurt them) and is a new direction in artificial intelligence something something something. I’m very proud of it. You can find the AI on our facebook page and on twitter. I’m telling you, it’s pretty damn smart. It’s motherboard hails from Indiana, not “technically” known for intelligence.

I kid, there’s lots of intelligence in Indiana, you just have to turn over a lot of rocks to find it. (Joking!)

So, with the site coming along and still being built, updates nearly finished and some of the pages due to be filled with incredibly interesting nonsense, we’ll be posting more thrilling stories from the streets of Detroit. I’m going to stray from doing national crap, stray from politics and really just focus on Detroit. It’s an incredible place.
