<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Washington Blvd &amp; Lafayette Blvd-Downtown</h2>



<p><strong>Detroit – January 21, 2026</strong></p>



<p>At approximately <strong>12:45 a.m.</strong>, Detroit Police responded to reports of <strong>multiple manhole covers exploding</strong> near <strong>Washington Boulevard and Lafayette Boulevard</strong>. Officers on scene reported <strong>fire and flames emitting from the manholes</strong>.</p>



<p>DPD secured the area and restricted pedestrian and vehicle access for public safety. <strong>Detroit Fire Department Engine 1 and Ladder Truck 20</strong> were dispatched and responded to the scene. <strong>Power outages</strong> were reported in the surrounding area, and <strong>DTE Energy</strong> was notified.</p>



<p>DTE advised they <strong>do not provide electrical service in that specific area</strong>, but stated they would send a crew to evaluate <strong>natural gas infrastructure</strong>. <strong>Public Lighting Department (PLD)</strong> was also notified, as they provide electrical service in the area.</p>



<p>During the incident, <strong>Battalion Chief 1, Engine 9, and Ladder Truck 20</strong> were dispatched to investigate a <strong>fire alarm activation in the electrical room</strong> at <strong>1020 Washington Blvd (Hotel Indigo)</strong>. The alarm was believed to have been triggered by the power interruption.</p>



<p><strong>Michigan Gas Utilities (MichCon)</strong> was requested and responded with an estimated <strong>15–20 minute ETA at approximately 1:11 a.m.</strong></p>



<p>At <strong>1:21 a.m.</strong>, Battalion Chief 1 directed <strong>Engine 9 and Ladder Truck 20</strong> to remain at Hotel Indigo to monitor conditions. <strong>Engine 1 remained on scene</strong> at the manhole incident location.</p>



<p>According to Detroit Police officers on scene, <strong>power was restored at approximately 1:57 a.m.</strong></p>



<p>No injuries were reported. The cause of the manhole explosions remains under investigation.</p>
